Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) (Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla)

The Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, whose roots go back to the 16th century, constitutes a great pillar of higher education and scientific research in the region, and occupies an outstanding place among the public universities of the country, thanks to the joint effort of all the members of the institution.
What today is the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, is the result of a long history that goes back to May 9, 1578, when a group of Jesuit religious established their residence in Puebla, and at the express request of the City Council, they founded the Seminary of the Society of Jesus of San Jerónimo.
Nine years later, they erected a school for the training of the new generations of New Spain.
The institution was sponsored by the merchant Don Melchor de Covarrubias and was founded by means of a deed dated April 15, 1587, under the name of Colegio del Espíritu Santo.
With the capital donated by Covarrubias, around 1670 construction began on the building we know today as Carolino, a building that was completed late in the 18th century, although more additions were made in the 19th century, and the south and east façades were modified. at the beginning of the 20th century.
Since its foundation, the Colegio del Espíritu Santo was the focus of humanism and science in the central-eastern region of what was then New Spain. Its classrooms received prominent men of letters and humanities, such as Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora, Antonio del Rincón, Francisco Javier Solchaga, Diego José Abad, Francisco Javier Alegre, and Francisco Javier Clavijero.
The political conflicts in Spain, with the rise of the House of Bourbon to the Spanish throne and its confrontation with the Society of Jesus, affected the College of the Holy Spirit. On June 25, 1767, the Jesuits were expelled from Spanish dominions by King Carlos III. Sixty-one Jesuit religious went into exile from the College, accompanied by their co-religionists from the San Ildefonso, San Javier, San Ignacio, and San Jerónimo schools, also located in the city of Puebla.
